Sargasso Travels to the Buffalo Trace Distillery!

Last weekend Bar Manager Matthew Selfridge and myself traveled to the Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, KY. Buffalo Trace produces 17 different spirits at the distillery. Buffalo Trace, Pappy Van Winkle, Sazerac, Blanton's, and Eagle Rare to name a few. I remember being impressed by the size of the barrel houses. Some of them holding over 20,000 barrels each. Most are brick, but one is all metal (pictured below). We were told this allowed hot and cold to enter and exit the building faster thus being better for the whiskey barrels. 95% of all Bourbon is made in KY. In order to be called Bourbon, the liquor going into the barrell has to be a minimum of 51% corn as the grain. Most at the Buffalo Trace Distillery are between 70%-90% corn.

Walking around the beautiful grounds is an amazing experience. You start to realize that you are in the same place they have been making whiskey since the late 1700's. It gives you a sense of real US history just being there. Walking through barrel house that is over 100 years old, you smell the sweetest scent of bourbon in the air. There almost a mist of essence that wafts over you while you walk through. They call this "The Angel's Share" at the distillery.

After exiting the barrel house and heading to the bottling line, we walked up to see a Buffalo carved out of a 300 year old Sycamore Tree that has been there since the distillery opened in the the late 1700's. It is very detailed and nearly 8 feet tall. Making it nearly the size of an acutal Buffalo.

After a quick detour we headed the Bottling Line for Blanton's whiskey.

After the bottling line we were taken to small room with a short video about the distillery's history.

After the tour we were all given "samples" of the Buffalo Trace line.

Having tasted some of the finest bourbon made anywhere, we decided to take a look around the rest of the grounds. This is what we found.

Thank You for taking the time to read about our visit to the Buffalo Trace Distillery. Come back soon to see more about the producers of our products here at Sargasso.
